Tushin Horse

Origins

Also called Tushuri and Tushinskaya, the Tushin breed comes from the eastern regions of Georgia and is a very rare saddle breed today. They are tough, hardy animals capable of covering long distances as easily as they handle cattle.

This breed comes from ancient Georgian horses, but were strongly influenced by a number of eastern breeds. Thought to date back to between the 1st and 3rd centuries, this is a breed shaped by their environment. Their robust nature made them great as military mounts and as work horses. Over the centuries they have received infusions of outside blood at several points, but generally the crosses are not as able to withstand the harsh environment of the Caucasus and discontinued.

Thought to be one of the oldest breeds in the Caucasus, their numbers have begun to dwindle and there are not official sources of information about their numbers.
