Intro
Not an official breed, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Horse is a type, selected based on specific characteristics.
Origins
Known for their black coat, starkly contrasting the red RCMP jackets, this type is bred more for personality and color than strict bloodlines. Inspired by the King’s Guard horses in London, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Horse was established by Stuart Zachary Taylor Wood. Made Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, one of his first actions was to establish breeding of black horses.
In 1939 black horses were purchased for breeding and Wood established a stud at Fort Walsh. The foundation was Thoroughbred crossed with Hanoverian mares. Further crosses with Hanoverian or other RCMPH are allowed, but cannot be crossed with Thoroughbred blood. Color is a distinct factor in the type and only black animals are allowed. Breeding is selective and non-black animals are sold. Wood himself oversaw the breeding, even after his retirement in the mid 20th century. He continued to remain involved until he died in 1966.
Royal Mount
As the type was inspired by the Royal Guard and Canada’s deep connections to the UK, Queen Elizabeth II was gifted a coal black RCMPH. Royal stables aside, they are perhaps best known for the Musical Ride, a traditional Canadian event that dates back to the late 19th century. In part their breeding is based on executing these formations and drills.
Modern Type
Today the stud has moved to Pakenham, but RCMPH is still faithfully bred to type. While the original bloodlines included Thoroughbred genetics, they have phased that out and only accept black Hanoverian in their breeding. Training begins at three and each animal is evaluated at six years. Those not suited are sold as sport horses, the rest are enlisted in the force.
