Intro
Also called Rheinisches Reitpferd, Rhinelander horse or Rhenish Warmblood, the Rhenish Riding Horse is a German sport horse type. They are traditionally bred at the Warendorf State Stud in Germany, along with the Westphalian.
Origins
Historically, horse breeding in the Rhineland was focused on the coldblood draft breeds used for heavy agricultural work. After mechanization began to grow during the mid 20th century, heavier animals were no longer needed and numbers dwindled. In 1957 the Wickrath State Stud closed their doors, changing the face of horse breeding in the area. During this time, pleasure and sport horses began to come into favor and by the 1970’s Rhenish breeders began to develop a new warmblood based on Westphalian, Hanoverian and Trakehner animals.
