Palatinate Ardennes Coldblood

Intro

Also known as Pfalz Ardenner Kaltblut, the Palatinate Ardennes Coldblood is a variation of the heavy Ardennes draft breed. They come from the Pfalz or Rhineland-Palatinate area of Germany.

Origins

The Ardennes itself is an ancient breed, although this offshoot is relatively young, their studbook being established in 1906. Palatinate Ardennes comes from crosses between various French and Belgian draft animals, although French Ardennais had the most influence on the breed. Even though the studbook for this breed is open accepts a large number of draft bloodlines, as long as they had one registered Pfalz Ardenner parent.

The Palatinate Ardennes was not considered a breed for many years, but rather a type of Ardennes and by the 1970’s their numbers had dwindled. That changed in the 2010’s when a group of enthusiastic breeders dedicated themselves to preserving this versatile breed.
