Onega Horse

Intro

Named for the region where they were bred, the Onega Horse wasn’t a breed, but a variety of Karelian Pony, which is a type of Russian Pony. According to the DAD-IS they are considered extinct as of 2006.

Origins

Established at the end of the 19th or early 20th centuries, this breed is known for its toughness and ability to thrive on poor fodder. These scrubby little horses didn’t have any central breeding programs and were likely left semi-feral during parts of the year. They were generally used for pulling loads, whether carts or sleds.
