New Olexandrian Heavy Draft Horse

Intro

The New Olexandrian Draft is not particularly new anymore and come from a base of Western European cart horses crossed with local mares.

Origins

Breeding began in the mid 19th century when heavier stallions were imported into the Poltava region. These were mainly Belgian Ardennes, but there was also some Belgian Draft and Percheron influence. They were crossed with local mares of various bloodlines.

Notably, the New Alexandrian is used to improve other breeds and adding their genetics routinely helps smaller breeds produce larger and stronger animals. They were named for the New Olexandria Village where the stud was located.

According to the DAD-IS this breed is critical ans as of 2022 there were only 86 left.
