Miyako Pony

Intro

The Miyaoko Pony comes from Miyaoko Island in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan, an area that has been known for their horseflesh for centuries. Small ponies have roamed the island for years bearing a striking resemblance to their Mongolian ancestors.

Origins

Agricultural needs after the second World War saw crosses with larger breeds to create their 14 hand size. However, since the mid-20th century these pony’s numbers have struggled significantly. Luckily breeding programs are in place to preserve their heritage and the Japanese Government has protected them.
