Mexican Pony

Intro

Similar to country bred animals in many countries, the Mexican Pony is a small criollo type specific to Mexico.

Origins

The origins of this pony are likely Iberian animals brought over for exploration. From the beginning they were tough animals, selected for their likelihood of surviving a boat trip across the Atlantic. The survivors went on to explore the two American continents, with climates and geography they had no recent ancestral memory of. The descendants of these animals spanned two continents to became many horse breeds of the Americas.

Some of these breeds are protected today for their lineage and centrally maintained. Others are bred in pockets by individual breeders, communities or left to their own devices. In all likelihood, the Mexican Pony falls into the latter category, as there is little reliable information about them. The DAD-IS lists two pony breeds in Mexico, but only one is considered native. For now, they are combined here.
