Kwanhama Horse

Intro

Considered the only true Angolan horse breed, the Kwanhama or Kwanyama horse is most commonly found in the Cunene province. However their numbers are very low and dropping due to droughts in the area. Thus causing local populations to begin using donkeys instead of horses as they are more drought tolerant.

Origins

Bred by the Kwanhama people and used for male initiation parties, the lone breed of Angola is a total mystery. They are thought to be the ancestors of horses brought to the country during the early 1900s.

Currently there are attempts being made to get the breed internationally recognized and preserve their bloodlines. The DAD-IS doesn’t not recognize them as of 2024.
