Kaimanawa Horse

Intro

The only horse breed native to New Zealand, this is a population of feral animals whose ancestors were brought to the country late in the 19th century. Animals that were let loose or escaped found a home together in the Kaimanawa mountains, for which they are now named.

Origins

Over the years these relatively small animals have grown in stature but due to the many different breed influences their blood includes. There is wide variety of conformation in the herds and they are not technically a breed, but listed in the DAD-IS. The area where they live is protected land
