Intro
The Cheval de Dressage Français or French Dressage Horse is not a specific breed, but rather a type of horse that excels at the sport of Dressage. The registry is meant to promote and develop the breeding of this specific type.
Origins
late in the 20th century the lack of a dedicated dressage breed in France was addressed by a handful of breeders. They began with a base of Lusitano, crossing them with warmbloods and found a good balance, creating a breed with natural abilities sought after in the discipline. For awhile it was a pet project, but the animals produced were of such good quality that a registry was created.
In 2018 the French Dressage Association along with some of the breeders attempted to have the French Dressage Horse officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture. The breeder’s strict records and success with breeding justified their request and they were approved and their studbook was established in 2020. They also requested international recognition by the WBFSH in 2021.
