Cheval Lorrain

Intro

The Cheval lorrain, or Haretard which is not an endearing nickname, rather a moniker for poorly bred horses, looked upon with contempt. France has almost always produced fine horseflesh.

Origins

This is a very old breed, found during the 15th century specifically in the region of Lorraine from which they take their name. While their origins are not really known there is speculation they share some genetics with the Comtois and Ardennais, others claim an ancient Arabian origin. Their native region has experienced many conflicts, each time unsettling the local people and animals.

Over the years this took its toll and farmers of the area began to breed small, ugly horses which wouldn’t break them if requisitioned or captured. These animals were bred for pulling loads and light agricultural work and while ugly, they developed a reputation for being tough and strong despite their small stature. As the years went on and mechanization progressed, small horses fell out of favor.
