The American Miniature Mediterranean Donkey breed originally comes from the small Italian islands of Sardina & Sicily. During the 18th century the size of these animals made them handy for pulling grain wheels inside & as pack animals for mountain shepherds.
Coming to America
Brought to america early in the 20th century these tiny animals quickly became popular as pets. Their kind nature and willing attitude endearing them to horse & donkey fans all over North America.
Keeping Them Around
Today the mini’s are essentially extinct in their native lands. Thankfully their popularity in the states has further refined & protected the breed while keeping their numbers on a steady rise.
