The handsome Altmärkisches Kaltblut (or Altmark Coldblood) horse is extremely rare German breed which comes from Saxony-Anhalt.

A Little Backstory

Established in the 19th century using a base of Percheron, Belgian Draft and Shire animals. All three are well-established breeds and they complimented one another. The result was a strong, willing animal with a great attitude that was loved for its versatility.

It seems WWII was devastating to the horse world in Europe and particularly in Germany many draft breeds were devastated for a variety of reasons.

What Makes Them Special

There are so few of them left, each one is special. While it’s not an ancient breed, it is one that has persisted despite war and mechanization. A small herd is maintained to keep their genepool alive, presumably by the German government. To learn more about them, be sure to visit the Altmärkisches Kaltblut breed page.
