they have horses in this country but i don’t know how as they appear not to have any horse feed. you should never ask an animal to work for you or keep one if the only way you can do this is with all of its bones showing and hio bones sticking out.

Agreed Kelly, all of the horses pictured here are quite skinny…and I choose my images carefully. It is a sad fact that in many countries horses are used as beasts of burden and kept under conditions that are really abusive.

Many of the South American cultures share a healthy respect for the equine animal, but unfortunately as you make your way into Central America and Mexico animals in general are less respected by society.

Although, I see pictures of starving and abused horses every day from right here in the US. So I wonder if we can ever claim to be better to our animals…

I agree with both of you,Kelly and Paige. These horses seem so starved,I can’t beileve my eyes.Im upset that anyone would do this to a horse. And as you said,Paige,I wonder, too. But one day mankind will be punished for it.It may seem like the right thing to do for punshing a horse,BUT COME ON!!!Thats pure abuse right there. If they can’t keep it fed and healthy, then they shouldn’t be allowed to keep one at all!

i totally see your point in this as i live here in guatemala and im not from here when i go to places and i see the horses it makes me so sad as i had a horse before i cam here but on the other hand you have to understand these people are very very poor and dont get much money at all and it is the only wat they can make a living i no it isnt an excuse but its the only way the people can survive its really sad to see here but the people dont get any oney from the government here so its all they can do its so very sad to see and be around!

If they and their children are JUST as skinny because they don’t have the means for food for themselves or their animals who help contribute to the family dynamics…. who are we to judge, though, it still breaks my heart when my horses are hog fat and those don’t have a clue what it’s like to have a full belly.

Some observed that some of the horses pictured appeared to be underfed.
It is not a simple matter of equine abuse, as ALL the ‘skinny horses’ pictured are in much better body condition than many of the native Guatemalan people.
For those upset by the apparently underfed horses, you may wish to consider ‘The People who Crawl’ video from Guatemala. KOMU-TV, Missouri > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgHeafgNDj4

Great pictures. I think before anyone really gets upset about the condition of the horses they must truly understand the situation in Guatemala with horses. I am the founder of Fundacion Equinos Sanos para el Pueblo. It is an organization that is dedicated to helping horse owners improve the welfare of their animals. The body condition of the horses is not eht best but many of the fat horses in the USA is just as abusive. It is much more complecated issue and one must truly understand equine welfare and equine body conditions to understand. I will say from my 23 years of experience in Guatemala that the horses there get to exibit far more natural horse behavior then most horses taht ar fat and in a stall in the USA.
