The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson

horse-boy1Recently I was contacted by Fran Jurga about an interesting new book that is worth checking out called The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson.

The Background

This is a true story of Mr. Isaacson’s son, Rowan who was diagnosed with autism, a condition which made communication with him almost impossible. An encounter with the neighbor’s horse became a shining moment which helped to pull Rowan out of his shell and improve his condition.

The Story

This enlightened moment inspired Rupert to take his son to the steppes of Mongolia, where horses have long been an ingrained and spiritual part of everyday life. There they hoped to consult shamans for help with Rowan’s condition.

Horse Boy is the story of the Isaacson family’s adventure in Mongolia, their trials and tribulations as they wander the landscape of autism and find a connection with nature. Absolutely without a doubt going to be a tearjerker.

Issues surrounding wild horses are becoming more and more mainstream thanks to people like Madeleine Pickens and Deanne Stillman who work hard to publicize the injustices these animals face.

Currently a legislation has been proposed to update the sorely outdated Wild Horse & Burrow Protection Act of 1971 HR 1018.

These amendments were introduced on Feb 2009 and propose updating aspects of the bill that deal with horse handling, preservation, round up, land management and adoption (they are paraphrased below).

Marysville’s Equine Rescue Association Needs Help

Horse with a hat onWe all know times are tough and that rescue facilities are filling up at an alarming rate. Tragic really, that there are hundreds of thousands of unwanted horses in the US alone every year.

No Change In The Forecast

This is a problem that has gotten continually worse – and no doubt will continue to do so as more jobs go and feed prices rise.

A Sweet Lady and 30 Sick Horses

The Marysville Equine Rescue Association is a rescue operation that takes in unwanted, abused and sick horses. The amazing woman who founded and runs the operation is Vel Moore.

BLM Horse & Burro Adoption

Image from teepole

If you have the space and the funds to do it, adopting a wild horse can be a rewarding experience. The BLM clearly has too many to handle and the more of them we adopt the better (Madeleine Pickens has the right idea).

Getting A Mustang of Your Very Own

The horse and burro division of the Bureau of Land Management holds auctions all year round. These are events where the (qualified) public can go to purchase wild mustangs and burros that would otherwise suffer an ugly fate.

Miniature Horses as Guide Animals

For a long time I have been meaning to address the idea of miniature horses as guide animals. I’ve read about them, their owners, their trainers and even people who make some interesting shoes for them.

Makes Perfect Sense

Recently I ran across a website that doesn’t agree with using horses as guide animals, and it got me to thinking (and reading). Their arguments make perfect sense to anyone who spends time around horses, miniature or otherwise.

This site features articles written by people who actually use the animals to get them through their day safely, the vision-impared.
