{"id":9888,"date":"2025-10-02T01:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T01:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theequinest.com\/breeds\/?p=9888"},"modified":"2025-10-02T01:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T01:43:07","slug":"medimurje","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theequinest.com\/breeds\/medimurje","title":{"rendered":"Me\u0111imurje Horse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Intro<\/h3>\n<p>Among the oldest breeds native to Croatia, the Me\u0111imurski or Me\u0111imurje Horse is the result of cold-blooded stallions from Western Europe crossed with local mares with <a href=\"\/breeds\/anglo-arabian\">Anglo-Arabian<\/a> characteristics.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>While their roots are old, they have only been officilly recognized for a relatively short amount of time. The foundation stallions included <a href=\"\/breeds\/percheron\">Percheron<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/ardennes\">Ardennes<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/belgian-draft\">Belgian<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/burgundian\">Burgundian<\/a>. All systematically crossed to produce an incredibly strong and beautiful draft type. <\/p>\n<p>The breed peaked early in the 20th century and like many drafts of Europe were horribly affected by both wars. After the second world war, their remaining numbers further dwindled due to mechanization. Luckily in 1991 the Medimurje Horse Breeders Association was established in the hopes of preserving their bloodlines. Initially they received very little support, until 2018 when Me\u0111imurje County declared them protected status. Unfortunately their numbers are very low. <\/p>\n<p>Over time, two types have emerged, essentially heavy and lighter.
