At one point their numbers fell to around 50 animals, however they bounced back. By 2010 when they were protected by law the herds were 200 strong. This protection has allowed them to thrive and their numbers have grown to around around 1000 animals.

Unfortunately like many feral horses, they became a nuisance, competing with livestock for resources. The decision to protect the horses was rescinded in 2017 because damage claims were unsustainable. Luckily, they seem to have found a way to earn their keep. As the local terrain is quite challenging and horses are nomadic, they require local guides for tourism. Thus providing jobs and establishing a positive economic impact on the area.

Features

Average height 12.3 – 13.5 hands

Physique

Head has a straight profile
Neck is short and muscular
Back is short and straight
Chest is deep and wide
Legs are short, with broad joints
Hooves are well-formed and hard

Traditional Colors

Generally bay, brown, grey, black, chestnut, dun and palomino

Temperament

Docile and kind
Surefooted and hardy

Use

Feral animals

More Images

Video

Intro The feral horses of Livno come from farm animals released into the wild, today they are protected by law and part of the areas rich history.

[64
5,4,118,11,30,15,31
post-9864","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bosnia","tag-bay","tag-black","tag-brown","tag-chestnut","tag-dun","tag-grey","tag-palomino
["GET
