Known throughout France for their fine horseflesh, Dombes supplied at least two French Kings with mounts.

At the turn of the 19th century the herd of the region was requisitioned and most of the good horses were taken. This caused the heartbroken locals to turn from horses to cattle farming. It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that a small nucleus of Norman and Cotentin animals returned. These animals crossed well and produced high quality animals, which were later crossed with Thoroughbred blood. Giving rise to the Half Blood of the Dombes.

Not long afterwards, in 1958, most of the half-blood types in France were joined under the Selle Français registry. Officially, the Half Blood of Dombes is considered ‘extinct’, however it seems some private breeders continue their ancient breeding practices to keep the breed alive. They are raised semi-wild and grazed on wild pastures.

Features

Average height 15.4-15.8 hands
Mane and tail hair are fine

Physique

Head has a straight profile
Ears are long
Neck is thin
Shoulders are inclined
Back is short
Hindquarters are inclined
Legs are thin

Traditional Colors

Generally black, but can be bay or brown.

Temperament

Vigorous and adaptable
Good-natured

Use

Cavalry
Riding
Sport
Breeding
Show

Intro Not a breed on its own, Demi Sang de l’Ain, Caval de Bresse or the Half-Blood of the Dombes is a strain of Selle Français Horse bred in the Dombes and Bresse regions of France.

[33
5,4,118,125
post-9706","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-france","tag-bay","tag-black","tag-brown","tag-extinct
["GET
