Centuries in a climate so different from Mongolia has shaped these tough little animals to the area and changed their physical characteristics. In addition, imports including Arabian, Thoroughbred and possibly some Dutch breeds have played a part in influencing the animals found on the islands.

This breed is not listed in the DAD-IS, so is possibly a variant of one of the ‘official’ breeds of the country. Indonesia does not appear to have any centrally controlled studbooks or breed management, so local areas on each island may breed them to type for specific needs.

Features

Average height 12.2 – 13 hands

Physique

Head is small
Neck is short and muscular
Chest is deep
Shoulder is sloped
Legs are light

Traditional Colors

All colors

Temperament

Kind and hard working
Friendly and willing

Use

Farm work
Riding horse
Equestrian sport
Harness

Intro The Padang Pony comes from the island of Sumatra in Indonesia and is similar to the other pony breeds found in Indonesia including the Bali, Java and Timor.

[51
9
post-960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-indonesia","tag-all-colors
["GET
