Horse genetics in the country were in some ways carefully controlled, simply by the expense of bringing in new bloodlines. The Carlyon foundation consisted of imported Exmoor ponies crossed with local animals. The Exmoor is a heavy pony of Celtic type, incredibly robust and incredibly cute.

Welsh ponies are often used to improve pony breeds. They have a long lineage and distinctly attractive traits, from the wild ponies to the cob types. It is unclear which section the Welsh animals used were, but they were likely used to infuse some a finer and more upright blood.

Like the Carlyon, Comet horses are extinct. What is left of their bloodlines still runs free in the Kaimanawa Mountains.

Features

Average height 11.3-13.3 hands
Mane and tail hair is thick

Physique

Head has a straight profile
Neck is short
Back is short
Hindquarters are inclined
Legs were muscular
Hooves were small

Traditional Colors

Can be found in most colors, but chestnut and black are most common.

Temperament

Energetic and willing
Intelligent

Use

Riding
Transportation
Improving other breeds

Intro This handsome pony was only bred in New Zealand, using a foundation of Carlyon Pony mares crossed with two Welsh stallions called Kinarth Caesar and Comet.
