The original was a wild horse found on the British Isles and parts of Western Europe, which as the name suggests, was probably domesticated by the Celts<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>The term Celtic horse or pony generally refers to a group of small, native horses with similar characteristics. Found mainly in Western and Northern Europe, the type was small with a thick build and incredible agility. There emerged two fairly distinct types based on geography, essentially the island and continental. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Island Type<\/strong><br \/>\nFound native throughout the British Isles and includes <a href=\"\/breeds\/connemara-pony\">Connemara<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/exmoor-pony\">Exmoor<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/shetland-pony\">Shetland<\/a> ponies. Perhaps even the <a href=\"\/breeds\/icelandic-horse\">Icelandic ponies<\/a> have a genetic link. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Continental Type<\/strong><br \/>\nEvolved in France and along the Iberian Peninsula, today represented by the <a href=\"\/breeds\/garrano\">Garrano<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/navarra\">Jaca Navarra<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/basque-pony\">Pottok<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Features<\/h3>\n<p>Average height 12.8 hands<br \/>\nBack legs had no chestnuts<\/p>\n<h3>Physique<\/h3>\n<p>Head has a slightly concave profile that becomes convex towards the nose<br \/>\nHindquarters are straight<\/p>\n<h3>Traditional Colors<\/h3>\n<p>Generally <a href=\"\/colors\/base\/black\">black<\/a>, <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/brown\">brown<\/a>, <a href=\"\/dilution-genes\/dun\">dun<\/a> (with primitive markings) and sometimes <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/pangare\">mealy<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Temperament<\/h3>\n<p>Intelligent and brave<br \/>\nSpirited and loyal<\/p>\n<h3>Use<\/h3>\n<p>Riding<br \/>\nTransportation<br \/>\nPack animal<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intro There are a number of pony breeds which can be called Celtic, most of them are related to one another on some level.
