The Berba or Horse of Materi is not an official breed, they are actually a variety of the Koto Koli pony<\/a> that is found specifically in northern Benin. The Koto Koli breed is fairly widespread and can be found throughout Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. Likely related to the Barb<\/a> with localized influences. The Berba variety specifically is probably a strain of Barb that is bred around the city of Materi by the Berba people. Known for being lively mounts with great endurance, these small horses are supremely important to their people.<\/p>\n The Koto Koli dropped dramatically in numbers during the late 20th century. In part due to the creation of Pendjari National Park, which encroaches on traditional hunting territory of the Berbas.
