For the most part they were left semi wild when not needed for work and there was very little controlled breeding, Mother Nature shaped their characteristics. Over the centuries, their physical isolation has resulted in a very distinct type of pony.

Originally these ponies were thought to come from animals that lived in southwestern England late in the 16th century and were slowly exported over by settlers headed to Newfoundland. Unfortunately though they have survived for centuries, free roaming herds have been banned and they are no longer needed for agriculture. Late in the 20th century the herds were being thinned and sold to France as meat.

This threatened the ponies survival and in 1980 The Newfoundland Society was founded to protect their pure bloodlines from extinction.

According to DAD-IS they are at risk and as of 2017 there were between 1-15 left. The Equus Survival Trust lists them as critical with just over 400 registered globally.

Features

Average height 12 – 14 hands

Physique

Head is small and shapely
Ears are small and sharply pointed
Eyes are large and expressive
Neck is muscular

Traditional Colors

black | grey | bay | roan

Temperament

Gentle and willing to learn

Use

Riding pony
Work animal
Agriculture
Carriage pony

Helpful Links

* all links open in a new window
Newfoundland Pony Society
Newfoundland Pony Conservancy

More Images

Video

Intro The Newfoundland Pony is a sturdy little horse that was developed on Newfoundland Island in the easternmost province of Canada.

[69
126,5,4,134,15,7
post-923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-canada","tag-at-risk","tag-bay","tag-black","tag-critical","tag-grey","tag-roan
["GET
