Known for their fine horsemanship, they were formidable mounted warriors and most owned at least one horse. These original animals are thought to come from a local Schweiken breed (now extinct) infused with various Turkmenian and Mongolian strains.

Early in the 18th century, the King of Prussia selected the finest animals from his Royal breeding studs and in 1732 moved them to a new stud farm in Trakehen. The goal was to create a suitable cavalry mount, carefully crossing Arabian, Thoroughbred and Turkmenian bloodlines for the purpose. Influence from all three of these foundation breeds can be seen in the modern Trakehner of today.

In 1993, a Polish Trakehner association was established, but it wasn’t until 1999 when actual breeders began taking a more active role in organization. At the turn of the 21st century, their numbers began growing and the association applied for permission to maintain an official Polish Traken studbook. Relations were also established with Trakehner Verband and as of 2001 they are considered a sister organization.

In 2005, permission was granted for a studbook and was officially established in 2006.

Features

Average height 15.3 – 15.7 hands

Physique

Head is elegant and refined
Eyes are large and expressive
Neck is long and crested
Back is straight and short
Chest is deep
Legs are muscular with broad, clean joints
Hooves are solid

Traditional Colors

Solid colors

Temperament

Intelligent and even-tempered
Energetic and kind

Use

Riding horse
Sport horse
Light draft
Eventing horse
Show horse

Helpful Links

*All links open in a new window

Helpful Links

Polish Trakehner Association
Polish Genetic Biodiversity Programs

Video

Intro The Polish Traken is Poland’s strain of the handsome and tough Trakehner breed.
