The differences lie in conformation, as the Lusitano was specifically bred and built for the bullfighting ring. Considered an art form in Portugal, the Lusitano excels in the bullring with able-bodied movement and high spirit. They also share the same luxurious signature mane and tail as the Andalusian, built into their genes by years of breeding in hot weather climates.

There has been a breed registry for Iberian horses since 1912, but in 1967 it was divided into Portuguese and Spanish branches.

Features

Average height 15.2 hands
athletic
Strong presence
Elegant springy action
High degree of flexion possible in hind legs

Physique

Large head with pronounced convex profile
Almond shaped eyes
Strong arched neck
Deep, short-coupled body
Sloped croup and lower set tail
Short cannon bones

Traditional Colors

Generally grey, but can be found in most solid colors

Temperament

Intelligent
Affectionate
Courageous
Spirited

Use

General riding
Show horses
Performance animals
Bullfighting

Helpful Links

*All links open in a new window
Associação Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano , APSL
International Andalusian & Lusitano Horse Association
US Lusitano Association

More Images

Video

Intro A close brother to the mighty Andalusian, Lusitanian, Puro Sangue Lusitano or Lusitano horses share some of the oldest bloodlines around.

[21
15,25
post-815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-portugal","tag-grey","tag-solid-colors
["GET
