The people of this area have ancient ties with horsemanship and horse production.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>A highly valued member of society, horses were used for transportation of goods on mountain paths. The Lichuan is the largest of the southwestern Chinese breeds. <\/p>\n<p>In 1958 breeding and insemination programs were put into place that played a key role in the development of today&#8217;s breed.
