They began indespensable to the people who bred them and as they found their way outside of the cradle, others took notice. Today their blood flows through a number of breeds around the globe and along with the Arabian are considered among the grandfathers of modern horses. Barb blood leaves unmistakable characteristics like their convex profile and low set tail. While it is speculated that Barbs and Arabians share common ancestors or that one gave rise to the other, this is unknown. However their characteristics are distinctly different, almost opposite in some cases (face shape, for example). It is possible Iberian animals contributed to Barb bloodlines, separating them from the common ancestor. While mighty, the Barb is clearly less refined than its handsome brother.

There is not a lot of information about the Libyan specific barb and even fewer photographic examples (in the public domain anyway). This country clearly has an old equestrian culture, but for now it’s lost in translation.

Features

Average height 14 – 15 hands

Physique

Head is long with a straight or convex profile
Eyes are lively
Neck is medium in length and lean
Back is short and straight
Chest is long and deep
Legs are slender and solid with broad joints
Hooves are small and strong

Traditional Colors

chestnut | grey | bay | black

Temperament

Highly spirited
Loyal and true

Use

Riding

More Images

Image from Quryna lens under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license

Video

Intro This part of the world is known for fine horses and Libya only seems to breed the finest.
