They are known for being a fine pony that looks similar to a mini <a href=\"\/breeds\/arabian-horse\">Arabian<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>This is a native breed that has been there since prehistoric times. They are thought to be descendants of the <a href=\"\/breeds\/tarpan\">Tarpan<\/a>, but <a href=\"\/breeds\/arabian-horse\">Arabian<\/a> blood was introduced in the 8th century and later early in the 20th century. <\/p>\n<p>In 1946 the Landais was crossed with a number of larger animals in an effort to produce a more robust animal. Unfortunately this also diluted an ancient bloodlines, leaving very few pure individuals. Luckily the French government stepped in and is attempting to preserve the breed using <a href=\"\/breeds\/arabian-horse\">Arabian<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/welsh-b\">Welsh Section B<\/a> stallions sparingly to regenerate population.
