Also called Makasar, Kuda Maksar or Sulawesi pony, the Macassar is a small horse or pony found on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. They are very similar to Lombok Ponies<\/a> found on the island of Lombok and part of the Southwestern Asia Pony group. Named for the area of Macassar on the island of Sulawesi, the ancestors of this pony arrived on the island in the mid 16th century. Over time the island was visited and colonized by various horse breeding cultures, including the Portuguese.
