The breed was instrumental in formation of the Don breed . Unfortunately an invasion by Iran destroyed many of the stud farms and others were forced to flee which took a toll on breed numbers.

Today very few purebred animals remain. Although several breeding programs have been established to preserve their bloodlines, unfortunately none of them have been wildly successful.

Features

Average height 14.1 – 14.3 hands

Physique

Head is small and clean with a straight profile
Eyes are alert and expressive
Neck is average in length and set high
Chest is deep
Legs are well set
Hooves are small, hard and solid
Skin is soft and thin

Traditional Colors

chestnut | grey | bay | buckskin

Temperament

Calm and rational

Use

Improving other breeds
Riding horse

More Images

Helpful Links

Horses of Azerbaijan A Historical Survey

Video

Intro Also called Karabakhskaya, Lower Caucasus and Garabakh, the Karabakh horse is an ancient saddle breed that was developed in Nagorny Karabakh in Azerbaijan.

[43
126,5,32,11,15
post-732","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-azerbaijan","tag-at-risk","tag-bay","tag-buckskin","tag-chestnut","tag-grey
["GET
