Intro<\/h3>\n

Also called Domestique, The Gabon Domestic Horse is not actually a breed, but more of an overarching term to use for locally bred animals in a country with few horses. Gabon is not known as a horse nation and don’t particularly have an equestrian culture. Attempts to create native breeds in the country have been problematic, as African trypanosomiasis tends to be a problem there.
\n<\/p>\n

Origins<\/h3>\n

Over the years horses were sporadically introduced to the area by Catholic missionaries, but the climate, lack of fodder and water makes the area not great for keeping equines. During the colonial period horses were also imported, but apparently the last one died sometime in the mid 20th century. <\/p>\n

Average height 13-14 hands<\/p>\n

Sporadic breeding and no stud book means conformation will vary greatly<\/p>\n
