More recently the Highland breed became known for trekking and trail riding, with their inherent sure footed abilites and docile nature. Today there is a wide variety of Highland types and that is reflected in the array of different ways they are used. Breeding records have been kept since 1896 and the Highland Pony Society was founded in 1923.

According to DAD-IS they are at risk and as of 2019 there were only 237 left. The Equus Survival Trust lists them as vulnerable.

Features

Average height 11 – 14.5 hands

Physique

Head is attractive and well carried
Eyes are bright and kind
Neck is medium in length
Chest is deep
Hindquarters are powerful and well-developed
Legs have broad knees and silky feathering
Feet are well-shaped and broad
Mane & tail are full and long

Traditional Colors

chestnut | grey | bay generally with a dun dilution and primitive markings.

Temperament

Docile and calm

Use

Riding pony
Hunting
Light agriculture
Cattle pony
Show pony
Harness work
Trekking

Helpful Links

* all links open in a new window
Highland Pony Society
Highland Pony Enthusiasts Club of America
Central Scotland Highland Pony Club
Highland Pony Enthusiasts
Highland Pony Society of Australia

Where to Buy

Lone Tree Farm
Talisker Highland Ponies
McClellan Highland Ponies

Highland Pony Studs

Achnacarry & Craigiebrig Highland Pony Stud
Trailtrow Highland Ponies

More Images

Video

Intro The Highland Pony is an ancient breed whose hardy constitution has been formed over centuries by incredibly harsh conditions found in the Scottish highlands and Isles.
