Intro<\/h3>\n

The Heihe, Heilongkiang or Heilongjiang breed originated on the Song-liao plain in the northern Heilongkiang province of China. This area is quite proud of their horses and several state farms were responsible for much of the breed’s development.
\n<\/p>\n

Origins<\/h3>\n

This geographical region has widely varied climates and topographies, which meant that their animals had to be highly versatile to be beneficial and efficient. <\/p>\n

The breed was very systematically developed, employing an intricate cross breeding system that comprised of introducing Ardennes<\/a>, Soviet Heavy Draft<\/a>, Vladimir Draft<\/a>, Orlov Trotters<\/a>, Russian Thoroughbreds, Don<\/a> and Kabarda<\/a> horses to local stock. <\/p>\n

This highly scientific cross breeding was a large operation, involving many different farms and herds of the area. Eventually eight lines were selected for recognition and the breed established in 1975. There are two main types that make up the Heilongkiang breed, a lighter riding-draft and a more robust draft-riding type. <\/p>\n

Head is medium in size with a straight or convex profile

\nEars are long
\nNeck is medium length and wide at the base
\nLegs are strong hind legs often with overly crooked hocks <\/p>\n
