Found in the tropical rain forest and coffee farming areas in the Kafa-Sheka zone of southwestern Ethiopia, the Kafa horse is indispensable to the people that live there. They are primarily used as pack animals, carrying spices and coffee from remote inaccessible farmlands to highways and markets for distribution.

While the origins of this breed are shrouded in mystery, they are probably an old one. A typical heavy forest type, Kafa horses are among the largest of the Ethiopian breeds, well suited for the harsh tropical jungle conditions. A lifeline to the agrarian people of the area, this breed provides a major source of land transportation in this part of the country. <\/p>\n
Kafa mares are not generally tamed for work, used almost exclusively for breeding they are left to run feral in the forest year round. <\/p>\n
