The French, however have become particularly adept at crossing these two breeds to the point that French animals are almost considered their own distinct breed.

Origins

The French line is traced back to two stallions, the Arabian Massoud and the Turk Aslam. Both of them were imported from Syria and they were crossed with imported English Thoroughbred mares. Three fillies came from these unions and they became the foundation stock of France’s breeding program. Incidentally, all of France’s stock breeding programs are governed by a national organization, encouraging ethical and sound practices.

Anglo-Arabs have been an important element of horse breeding in France since the 17th century when they were used in the royal stables. Napoleon choose to use them as cavalry mounts for his campaigns and later they became popular riding mounts.

Today the original French Anglo-Arabs have been largely absorbed into the popular Selle Français sporting breed, however a small pocket of breeders continue the pure French Anglo-Arab breeding traditions. Perhaps the French success in this cross is because they tend to breed Anglo-Arab to Anglo-Arab rather than Arabian to Thoroughbred.

Features

Average height 15 – 16 hands

Physique

Head is intelligent with a straight profile
Eyes are large and expressive
Neck is long
Body is sturdy with a deep Thoroughbred chest
Legs are strong and sound
Feet are well formed

Traditional Colors

All colors

Temperament

Brave and true
Willing and intelligent

Use

Show horse
Eventing animal
Racing
Riding horse
Improving other breeds

Helpful Links

Anglo-Arabe, Association Nationale de l’Anglo-Arabes (ANAA)

Video

Intro The Anglo-Arab is a carefully controlled cross between Arabian and Thoroughbred bloodlines, bred in many different countries worldwide.
