They are a light horse type that comes from a cross between the <a href=\"\/breeds\/barb\">Barb<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/dongola\">Dongala<\/a> and various other local breeds.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>Not officially considered a breed and more commonly known as the West African Dongola, the Djerma horses are sometimes referred to as degenerate Barbs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/njap.org.ng\/index.php\/njap\/article\/view\/7308\">study done in 2016 on Nigerian horse breeds<\/a> did not identify the Djerma as a breed of the country, but their sample was only 31 horses so it&#8217;s likely not representative of such a diverse country.
