The small breeds imported were robust and perfect for use in coal mines of the Appalachian mountains.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>The bloodlines of the American Mini draw from many sources. Initially it was mainly <a href=\"\/breeds\/shetland-pony\">Shetland<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/dartmoor-pony\">Dartmoor<\/a> stock, but later the Americans crossed them with <a href=\"\/breeds\/hackney-pony\">Hackney<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/poa\">POA<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/thoroughbred\">Thoroughbred<\/a> blood for size.<\/p>\n<h3>Going Legitimate<\/h3>\n<p>In 1978 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amha.org\/\">American Miniature Horse Association<\/a> was formed to protect and document the American Miniature horses as a distinct breed. Only animals within the required size guidelines and proper conformation were allowed to be registered.<\/p>\n<h3>2 American Miniature Pony Types<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Division A Miniatures<\/strong><br \/>\nUp to 34&#8243; in height at the withers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Division B Miniatures<\/strong><br \/>\nBetween 34&#8243; and 38&#8243; in height at the withers<\/p>\n<h3>Features<\/h3>\n<p>Average height &#8211; up to 38&#8243;<br \/>\nAgile and strong<\/p>\n<h3>Physique<\/h3>\n<p>Due to the different bloodlines, there are different body types of American Miniatures.
