Many of the animals that were left behind became the feral horses of the US today, while others were adopted and bred by various indigenous tribes.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianhorse.com\/\">American Indian Horse Registry<\/a> (AIHR) was established in 1961 to preserve and document the pedigrees of Native American horses in the hopes of preserving their unique bloodlines. <\/p>\n<h3>5 Classifications of American Indian Horse<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Class O<\/strong><br \/>\nBred to preserve original bloodlines (not conform to breed standards). Any horse registered since 1979 has direct bloodline connections to one of various tribes. They can also be registered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishmustang.org\/\">Spanish Mustang Registry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class AA<\/strong><br \/>\nMust have at least one Class O parent. Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildhorsesonline.blm.gov\/Animals\">BLM<\/a> horses qualify for this classification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class A<\/strong><br \/>\nHave unknown pedigrees, most <a href=\"https:\/\/wildhorsesonline.blm.gov\/Animals\">BLM<\/a> horses qualify under this classification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class M<\/strong><br \/>\nInclude modern bloodlines, one parent may be registered under another breed registry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class P<\/strong><br \/>\nFor ponies of Indian type, with <a href=\"\/breeds\/galiceno\">Galiceno<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/poa\">POA<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/welsh-a\">Welsh<\/a> or <a href=\"\/breeds\/shetland-pony\">Shetland blood<\/a> in their pedigrees.
