They are now listed in the DAD-IS as extinct as of 2006.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>Their foundation was local draft horses crossed with <a href=\"\/breeds\/buryat\">Buryat<\/a> and they were bred at the stud which gave them their name, Shilkovskiy stud. It appears there are two types of the breed, the old type which is likely extinct. Then a modern type, which also comes from crosses between Buryat, but with lighter <a href=\"\/breeds\/english-thoroughbred\">English Thoroughbreds<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/orlov-trotter\">Orlov Trotters<\/a>. This produced a faster, larger animal that were well suited for riding, but sacrificed robustness. <\/p>\n<p>While the DAD-IS lists them as extinct, there is speculation that some pure old type animals still exist. This is generally in regions where crosses didn&#8217;t do well and the old traits remained important. <\/p>\n<h3>Features<\/h3>\n<p>Average height 13.5 &#8211; 14.5 hands (old type was smaller)<\/p>\n<h3>Physique<\/h3>\n<p>Head has straight profile and large eyes<br \/>\nShoulder is beveled<br \/>\nWithers are high<br \/>\nBack is long<br \/>\nCroup is sloping<br \/>\nLimbs are dry with hard hooves<\/p>\n<h3>Traditional Colors<\/h3>\n<p>All <a href=\"\/colors\">colors<\/a> are exhibited, but no <a href=\"\/colors\/white-patterns\/pinto\">pinto patterns<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<h3>Temperament<\/h3>\n<p>Well balanced and calm<br \/>\nTough and courageous <\/p>\n<h3>Use<\/h3>\n<p>Riding horse<br \/>\nTransportation<br \/>\nAgriculture<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intro Also called Chilkovskaya and Shilkov, the Chilkov Horse started in the 17th century, developed in Republic of Buryatia, which is the far east of Russia.
