They come from Iowa, originating with a foundation draft mare named Old Granny in 1905.

Origins

The only draft breed native to the US, the American Cream Draft is a rare breed with a cream coat, pink skin and amber colored eyes – all three specific traits of the champagne dilution gene.

The American Cream Horse Association of America was developed in 1944 and recognized in 1950 by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. The flagship mare was actually a very rare champagne draft. According to UC Davis testing center the dilution doesn’t run in draft types, but it does run in Iberian strains found the Americas. Old Granny was clearly not a pedigreed draft. To preserve her unique coloring without loosing size, she was bred to a number of different draft breeds and colors. The result was a small herd that has persisted into the 21st century.

Modern Cream Drafts

Like their European counterparts, the replacement of farm animals with heavy equipment caused a sharp decline in the cream numbers and the breed faced extinction.

In 1982 a revival attempt was made by members who re-opened the organization books. Today the American Cream Draft breed is not out of the woods, but their numbers are increasing. The renewed interest has put an emphasis on keeping bloodlines as they have always been, resisting the temptation to create a more ‘modern’ type of animal.

According to DAD-IS the American Cream is at risk and as of 2017 there were only 410 left. The Equus Survival Trust lists them as critical with an estimated global population of less than 450, primarily in the USA.

Features

Average height 15 – 16.3 hands
Medium-heavy draft type

Physique

Head is refined with a flat or concave profile
Eyes are wide set and expressive
Well muscled shoulders
Rounded hindquarter and large barrel

Traditional Colors

Cream color comes from the champagne dilution gene (sometimes with a cream dilution)

Temperament

Calm and quiet demeanor
Easy to train and eager to please
Strong and able

Use

Driving
Agriculture work
Show horses
Riding horses

Helpful Links

*All links open in a new window
American Cream Draft Horse Association

Video

Intro A relatively new breed, the American Cream Draft is a color breed in the United States.
