Their name translates to &#8220;Flemish Horse&#8221; referring to their strong initial <a href=\"\/breeds\/friesian\">Friesian<\/a> influence. This Flemish heritage provides them a defining characteristic, a beautiful <a href=\"\/colors\/base\/black\">black<\/a> coat (although mares may be dark <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/brown\">seal<\/a>).<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>Established in 1983, they were developed as a light draft or harness horse that also made a good mount. The Vlaamperd foundation were Dutch Friesians, with various infusions of local breeds, including the now-extinct <a href=\"\/breeds\/calvinia\">Cape Horse<\/a>.
