By the 17th and 18th centuries many of the bloodlines had been diluted with the blood of eastern horses. Today they are a hardy mountain breed.

A large percentage of horses in the country are of this breed and it is an important part of the area’s history. Today they are considered at risk and according to the DAD-IS as of 2003 there were 12390 left.

Features

Average height 12.3 – 14. hands
Small, compact and sturdy

Physique

Head is heavy with straight profile
Neck is short and muscular
Back is short and straight
Chest is deep and wide
Legs are strong, short and muscular with broad joints
Hoof is well-formed and hard

Traditional Colors

black | chestnut | grey | bay | dun | palomino

Temperament

Docile and good natured
Surefooted and hardy

Use

Farm animal
Transportation
Riding horse

More Images

Video

Intro Along with the Hucul and the Konik ponies, the Bosnian Mountain Horse is one of the Balkan breeds and all three share the same ancestors.

[64
126,5,4,11,30,15,31
post-296","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bosnia","tag-at-risk","tag-bay","tag-black","tag-chestnut","tag-dun","tag-grey","tag-palomino
["GET
