There are no horses native to the continent, but today wild Brumbies run feral in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Northwestern Australia.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>The first horses arrived in Australia in 1788 and their long boat journey to get there meant that only the strongest animals survived. This coupled with the dry and inhospitable climate into which they were brought makes the Australian Brumby a tough animal, able to survive extreme drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The stock that fed brumby herds were used as war mounts during both of the World Wars.
