This pony breed is a larger version of the <a href=\"\/breeds\/welsh-a\">Welsh Mountain Pony<\/a> which was the foundation for the breed. They are classified as riding ponies.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>This pony was created by breeding local <a href=\"\/breeds\/welsh-a\">mountain ponies<\/a> with <a href=\"\/breeds\/hackney-horse\">Hackney<\/a> blood and that of a small <a href=\"\/breeds\/english-thoroughbred\">Thoroughbred<\/a> stallion named Merlin.
