Natural selection has created an incredibly tough, robust animal. This breed is capable of dealing with harsh conditions and minimal forage while managing difficult work in bitter cold or deep mud.

Relatively unknown until the early 20th century when one of their numbers covered over 1100 miles in 21 days. This put the breed on the map and made them the study of scientists in 1948.

In more recent times the smaller stature of the Tavda made them unsuitable for heavier draft work and an attempt was made to improve the breed by adding Ardennes and trotter blood. Today this is a rare breed and should be protected.

Features

Average height 13.3 – 14.2 hands

Physique

Chest is broad
Croup is muscular
Legs are clean and strong
Hooves are hard

Traditional Colors

chestnut | bay | brown | dun | buckskin

Use

Draft
Riding horse
Transportation
Agriculture

More Images

Intro Also called the Tavdinka and Tavdinskaya, the Tavda is a forest type draft breed that comes from northern Russia and is considered a rather natural breed as their development has had very little human intervention.

[20
5,118,32,11,30
post-1508","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-russia","tag-bay","tag-brown","tag-buckskin","tag-chestnut","tag-dun
["GET
