One says they could be a descendant of the Przewalskii, another (and more favored) they come from Celtic and wild Iberian crosses. While they originated in the province of Burgos, there are two other breeding centers for the breed.

Historically the Losino has been a traditional part of the region, as transportation and for military. Their hardy nature, resistant genetics and ability to traverse mountain paths with ease have made them incredibly useful. Most of the traditional local activities and celebrations include them on some level.

Today the Losino is valuable primarily as a grazer, actively maintaining scrub land to help prevent forest fires. They are able to live on poor fodder and withstand rough climate conditions.

This breed maintained decent numbers until the mid 20th century when the lack of demand for their type caused their numbers to decline to critical levels. In 1986 a breeding program was established to preserve the bloodlines of this pony, with a studbook established in 1998. According to the DAD-IS the Losino Pony is endangered and as of 2023 there were 965 left.

Features

Average height 12.8-13.8 hands

Physique

Head is proportionate and fine with a straight or slightly convex profile
Ears are small
Eyes are large and expressive
Neck is strong and wide at the base
Chest is broad
Back is broad and wide
Legs are thin with good joints
Tail is set low
Hooves are small, hard and black

Traditional Colors

Black, with no white markings except a star

Temperament

Lively and intelligent
Willing and able

Use

Land management
Riding pony
Sport pony
Harness

Helpful Links

Asociación del Caballo Losino
Losino Horse Breeders Association (El Bardojal)
Official Breeds Catalogue

More Images

Video

Intro Also called Jaca Burgalesa, Caballo Losino, Losina and Losino Pony, this hardy little horse is named for Losa Valley in the the Burgos Province of Spain.
