Easily a grandfather of modern horse breeds, Andalusian blood influences a huge variety of breeds known today.

Origins

Andalusian type horses are known by many different names including Iberian Saddle/War horse, Lusitano, Alter Real, Carthusian, Spanish Horse, Portuguese, Peninsular and Castilian. They are officially known as the Purebred Spanish Horse (Pura Raza Española) and have long been thought to embody perfection when it comes to horseflesh.

Their roots and convex profile are likely to have come from Asian influence prior to the Muslim invasion of the Iberian peninsula. Some believe that Barb blood influenced the roman nose of this breed, however Iberian horses displayed their grand profile centuries before the Barb came to be. Although the two breeds have likely been crossbred throughout the years.

Shaped by War

In spite of their lengthy history, all living Andalusian animals can trace their lineage back to a small number of animals bred by religious orders during the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 19th century war ripped through Spain and most available horseflesh was requisitioned or stolen. During this same time an epidemic caused purebred numbers to further decline, as did an influx of Norman and Arabian blood.

Throughout all of the chaos, one small herd was kept hidden from the destruction at the Carthusian monastery near the coast of Jarez de la Frontera. This herd was later used to renew the breed.

Modern Andalusian

Early in the 20th century breeding trends changed in Spain and the traditional Spanish animals lost even more footing. Since then they have made a slow comeback. The modern Andalusian wasn’t exported from the country until 1962 at which time they made their way to Australia and the Americas (for the second time).

During the 21st century this handsome breed is on the rise & continued growth is expected. Their popularity worldwide is undeniable and their history is entwined with that of the people who have kept their bloodlines alive.

Valued Infusion

Pure Spanish blood infuses animals with a graceful and noble presence. When introduced to other breeds, they markedly improve stock and their strong qualities persist throughout generations. Their breeding began and is still taken very seriously in the region of Andalusia, Spain. It is from this region that they take perhaps their most well-known names.

Features

Average height 15.1 – 15.3 hands
Athletic with a strong presence
Elegant springy action
High degree of flexion possible in hind legs

Physique

Large sculpted head with convex profile
Bright eyes and a kind expression
Elegant arched neck
Deep, short-coupled body
Strong round hindquarters
Short cannon bones
Flowing mane and tail

Traditional Colors:

grey | bay | black | chestnut
Less commonly cremello | perlino | buckskin | palomino | dun

Temperament

Intelligent
Affectionate
Courageous
Spirited

Use

General riding
Show horses
Performance animals

Helpful Links

* All links open in a new window
Association of Breeders of Purebred Spanish Horses
Official Breeds Catalogue
International Andalusian & Lusitano Horse Association
Association of the Foundation Andalusian Horse
Andalusian Horse Association of Australasia
The British Association for the Purebred Spanish Horse
New Zealand Iberian Horse Association

Where to Buy

The International Andalusian Horse Importers

More Images

Video

Intro The Andalusian is up there with the Arabian when it comes to purity and length of bloodline.
