In their heyday they were widely used as a working horse, but sadly today they are on the list of endangered domestic animal breeds.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>In 1888 the breeders of Schleswig Holstein decided they wanted to separated the breeding of warmbloods from that of heavier animals and by 1891 the Schleswiger Horse Breeders Society was formed (their brandmark is still used today). <\/p>\n<p>To achieve desired results <a href=\"\/breeds\/holsteiner\">Holstein warmbloods<\/a> were crossed with <a href=\"\/breeds\/oldenburger\">Oldenburger<\/a>, <a href=\"\/breeds\/suffolk-punch\">Suffolk Punch<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/breeds\/jutland\">Jutland<\/a> blood and the resulting animal was one of great presence, strength and personality. <\/p>\n<h3>Features<\/h3>\n<p>Average height 15.2 &#8211; 16 hands<\/p>\n<h3>Physique<\/h3>\n<p>Head is short and straight<br \/>\nNeck is well proportioned<br \/>\nBack is short and well muscled<br \/>\nLegs are strong, dry and have light feathering<br \/>\nHooves are round and good quality<\/p>\n<h3>Traditional Colors<\/h3>\n<p>Generally <a href=\"\/colors\/base\/chestnut\">chestnut<\/a> with <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/flaxen\">flaxen mane &#038; tail<\/a> but also found in <a href=\"\/colors\/base\/black\">black<\/a> | <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/greying\">grey<\/a> | <a href=\"\/colors\/modifiers\/bay\">bay<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Temperament<\/h3>\n<p>Placid and willing<\/p>\n<h3>Use<\/h3>\n<p>Agriculture<br \/>\nLogging<br \/>\nFarming<br \/>\nMilitary mounts<br \/>\nBrewery horses<\/p>\n<h3>Helpful Links<\/h3>\n<p><small>* all links open in a new window<\/small><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schleswiger-kaltblut.de\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society of Schleswiger Horse Breeders<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intro Also called the Holsteiner Coldblood and Schleswiger Kaldblut, the Schleswiger Heavy Draft comes from northern Germany.
