They come from the islands of Sumba and Sumbawa in Indonesia.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>Almost all of the Indonesian pony breeds are descendants of Chinese or Mongolian animals, giving them a sturdy foundation. Over the centuries, islands traded animals and imports from outside the country were brought in from time to time. Today strains found on each island have developed localized characteristics that separate them from each other and the mainland breeds that spawned them. <\/p>\n<p>Among the finest of Indonesian pony breeds, the Sandalwood and carries a higher concentration of <a href=\"\/breeds\/arabian-horse\">Arabian<\/a> and <a href=\"\/breeds\/thoroughbred\">Thoroughbred<\/a> blood than most.
